Major arcana

Wheel of Fortune

One of the twenty-two major arcana.

A great wheel hangs in cloud, lettered and turning, a sphinx poised at the top, a snake descending one rim, a jackal-headed figure climbing the other. In the corners a human, an eagle, a lion, and a bull read or wait, as if change itself were a text with four serious witnesses. Nobody in the picture is steering with a hand on a crank.

Upright, or the open face

The Wheel is the turn you do not fully author: a season, a market, a body, a piece of news that rearranges the week. You are not powerless inside it. You can tell the truth about what is luck, what is effort, and what is other people's choices, and you can refuse to build a religion out of a good month or a catastrophe out of a bad one. Adapt, and keep your name while the rim moves.

Reversed, or the pressured face

Under pressure you feel fastened to a repeating loop, or you resist a change that has already arrived and is sitting in your kitchen. Sometimes the excess is superstition: every delay becomes fate instead of a schedule, a budget, and a boundary. The card does not promise the next spin will rescue you; it asks what you will do with the spin you are in.

Questions

  • What just changed that I am still describing in the old tense?
  • Where am I calling luck virtue, or misfortune an identity?
  • What is mine to steer while the wheel does what wheels do?

A grounded example

Your manager posts next month's shifts on the same morning a class you wanted opens a seat because someone else dropped it. Both facts are Tuesdays, not omens. You do not mythologize yourself as chosen or cursed. You swap one shift, claim the seat, and tell a coworker early so the coverage stays fair.
