Setting up an altar

A surface that tells the truth about what you are doing. It can be a crate. It should not be a lie.

An altar is a place your hands can find in the dark. It is not a personality test and not a bill. The photographs on this site are one mood — plum, brass, a single good candle. Your life may require a tin, a shelf in a closet, or a tray you put away before dawn. Those are altars.

What an altar is for

It holds the few objects that remind you to return. It gives offerings a place to sit so they are not smeared across your whole room. It can be beautiful. Beauty is a kindness to the person who will stand there on a bad day, which is also you.

A basic arrangement

A workable pattern, not a law
PlaceWhat goes thereIf you lack it
CenterA light: candle, LED, or a lamp you designate.A lamp is a complete fire. Do not use open flame if you cannot watch it.
Left or east, if you like directionsAir: incense you can ventilate, a feather found on the ground, or simply breath.Skip incense in shared air, around asthma, babies, and most pets.
Right or southFire already covered by the light. Do not double it for drama. One flame is enough.
Front or westA cup of potable water. The same water you would drink. You will not be asked to drink moon-spell water later either.
Back or northA stone, a bowl of salt used as a symbol and kept out of the garden, or a plant in a pot.A houseplant you already water is a better earth than a bag of crystals.
Wherever your eye landsOne devotional image or none. A name written on paper is an image. No image is required.

An original rite of arranging

The First Surface

  1. 1Clear the surface completely. Wipe it. This is not symbolic dust. It is dust.
  2. 2Place the light but do not light it yet. Say what kind of practice this surface is for: devotion, study, grief, or “I don’t know yet.”
  3. 3Add water. Add one object of earth. Add one object that is only beautiful to you.
  4. 4Light the flame or turn on the lamp. If you cannot have flame, say so out loud. The room is allowed to know your constraints.
  5. 5Speak the words below, or your own.
  6. 6Sit until you have thought of one ordinary act this altar should encourage this week. Write it on paper and put it under the cup, or simply decide.
  7. 7Extinguish the light safely. Leave the objects, or put the tray away if discretion requires it. Either choice is a closing, not a failure.
This is a surface, not a throne. I set it so my hands can find their way back. What I love is welcome here, including the love that did not come with a script. I will keep only what I am willing to dust.

Upkeep

Wilted flowers leave. Food leaves the same day. Wax is scraped before it becomes geology. If an object starts to feel like an obligation from a worse version of you, thank it and put it in a drawer. An altar that cannot change is a storage unit.

Discreet and low-cost versions

  • A matchbox, a bottle cap of water, and a pebble in a drawer.
  • A phone wallpaper of the moon and a glass you already own, used and then washed.
  • Sharing a kitchen table: practice, then set it for dinner. The table is allowed to have two jobs.
