Mirror and water scrying

Looking until the eyes make patterns. Not a broadcast from the dead, and not safe for every nervous system.

Scrying is the practice of gazing into a reflective or shifting surface until images, memories, or impressions arise. Optical fatigue and imagination explain a lot of what happens, and that does not make the practice useless. It makes it a way of interviewing your own mind. Treat dramatic revelations about other people as gossip from yourself.

A short water scry

  1. 1Use a dark bowl and potable water, in a room you can brighten instantly.
  2. 2Set a timer for five minutes. This limit is the craft.
  3. 3Soften your gaze. If you see nothing, that is a valid result. Write “nothing.”
  4. 4If an image comes, write it as an image, not as an order. “I saw a door” is not “move house tomorrow.”
  5. 5When the timer ends, turn on the light, pour out the water, and look at a printed page or a plant to settle your eyes.
  6. 6Eat something. Do not scry while intoxicated, sleepless, or in crisis.
