Bonds

Friendship, invited rather than bound

A rite to become a better friend and to make one honest invitation. Not a rite to force closeness.

Timing. When you want friendship and have a real person in mind who is safe to ask, or when you are willing to go where people are.

Materials

  • Two cups.
  • Water or tea you like.
  • Paper.
  • A way to send a message.
  • A chair.

Steps

  1. 1Set two cups. Fill yours. Leave the other empty or fill it only if the person is actually about to arrive.
  2. 2Write what you are offering: time, honesty, a walk. Write what you are not offering: a romance disguised as friendship, a crisis hotline you cannot be.
  3. 3If there is a specific person, send a specific invitation with a real time. If they have said no before, do not send it. Wish them well and choose another action.
  4. 4If there is no person, choose a public third place you can stand: a class, a volunteer shift, a club. Put it on the calendar.
  5. 5Speak the words to the empty chair.
  6. 6Drink your cup. Wash both, so you are not keeping a shrine of longing.
  7. 7When the answer comes, believe it.
I make room. I do not fill the room with a person who has not agreed to sit. Friendship is a reply, not a spell that hunts.

Close. If you are declined, do the release rite only if you are clinging. Do not follow it with another message.

The practical action, which is not optional if you want the rite to be honest. Send the invitation or attend the third place.
