Wands
Nine of Wands
Wands · 9
A bandaged figure leans on a single staff, face wary, with eight more staves planted behind like a rough fence. The body has clearly been through an earlier round. The figure has not left the post, and the post has not become comfortable.

Upright, or the open face
Nine of Wands is stamina with a bruise; you are often closer to the end than fatigue wants you to believe, and you are also allowed to rest without calling rest desertion. Resilience is not a performance of being unhurtable. It is showing up again, limits named, because the thing still matters and because you have checked that the wound is not being asked to be the engine. Ask for a shift change if the hurt is current.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Pressured, hypervigilance becomes the whole personality, or you collapse and nickname the collapse wisdom. You may guard an old injury against a present that is safer than your body believes, or refuse help because help would prove you were tired in public. Too much defense and a postponed recovery keep you on the same sore watch.
Questions
- What am I still guarding, and is the threat in the room or in the memory?
- Where would rest make me more durable rather than less loyal?
- Who could take one watch so I can actually sleep?
A grounded example
On the ninth night of a community-theater run your voice is a scrape and your pride wants an extra rehearsal nobody scheduled. You do the show, you tell the director which line actually hurts, and you skip the heroic added scene you had been muttering about in the wings. Persistence, tonight, is accuracy. The fence of staves can stand without your martyrdom leaning on it.
