Swords
Nine of Swords
Swords · 9
A figure sits bolt upright in bed, hands over the face, nine swords ranked on the black wall like a gallery of worries. The quilt is patterned with little scenes of conflict, a mind still working under the covers. Night is the whole theater, and the mattress is not a refuge so much as a stage.

Upright, or the open face
Nine of Swords is the mind at night: worry, grief, the rehearsal of catastrophes that hire extra actors. Some of the blades are real problems and some are forged by the dark because the dark is bored and cruel. You deserve comfort, not a lecture about positive thinking, and you deserve to get the thoughts out of the ceiling and onto a page where they can be counted; dawn is a better editor than the small hours. If the distress is sharp, frequent, or frightening, a person trained to help is a rational next step, not a defeat and not a confession that the swords were right about you.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Pressured, the anxiety spills into the day as snapping, control, and the need to manage everyone so the night will not repeat, or it is suppressed until the body keeps the night shift anyway. You may be recovering and still tender, which is not the same as failing to heal on a schedule. Too much rumination and too little gentleness toward your own mind keep the quilt busy; a bad night is not a prophecy; it is a bad night with props.
Questions
- What is the fear in one sentence, without the sequels and the courtroom?
- What can be done in daylight, and what is only night-work that should not be paid overtime?
- What comfort would I offer a friend sitting up in this bed, and why am I exempt?
A grounded example
The night before a licensure exam you wake certain you have forgotten an entire domain you studied for weeks, the certainty complete and stupid. You write three facts you do remember, you drink water, and you do not open a new textbook in the dark to negotiate with panic. In the morning the exam is hard and ordinary. The swords on the wall do not get to grade it, which was never their job.
