Cups
Eight of Cups
Cups · 8
Under a moon that looks weary or half in shadow, a cloaked figure with a staff walks away from eight neatly stacked cups toward bare mountains. The cups are not smashed. They are simply no longer a reason to stay, and the figure does not look back for long.

Upright, or the open face
Eight of Cups is the departure from a situation that is not ruined and not nourishing. You have outgrown a job, a scene, a way of being liked that once fit and now echoes; leaving is not always a slammed door. Sometimes it is a walk toward harder ground because the easy cups have gone hollow; you may grieve what you leave. Go if your deeper life is no longer in the stack, and do not wait for the cups to become abusive before you are allowed to want a mountain.
Reversed, or the pressured face
Reversed, you drift back to cups you already know are thin, or you leave so abruptly that you abandon a bond or a craft that could have been repaired with one true conversation. Fear of the bare slope and a habit of quitting are both distortions; the card does not command you to abandon every imperfect thing. It asks whether you are staying from love or from the fear of disappointing a room.
Questions
- What am I done with that is not broken, only finished?
- Am I leaving toward something, or only away from discomfort?
- What would make staying honest, if staying is still a living option?
A grounded example
At a party where you know the playlist and the arguments by heart, you catch yourself performing a version of your laugh from three years ago. You thank the host without a speech about outgrowing the scene, take your coat, and ride home while the night is still kind to you. The cups remain for whoever wants them. You wanted a morning that did not require the costume.
