The open gate
Pisces
Pisces is the mutable water sign of late northern winter, a symbol for permeability, imagination, and the skill of closing a gate on purpose.

Picture and myth
Picture two fish joined by a cord, able to move and not able to pretend they are unrelated. Pisces is mutable water, the last sign of the tropical cycle, where edges soften and images arrive before plans. It is the song that shows up when a meeting has run out of nouns. It is also the fatigue of a person who has absorbed every mood in the room.
Ovid, in the Fasti, tells of Venus and Cupid fleeing the monster Typhon by leaping into the Euphrates and escaping as fish, bound together. Hyginus records the same strand, with a nod toward an older Syrian telling. The image is escape that is also a link.
The image is not a command to dissolve, and it is not a romance of victimhood. Two bodies, one tether, a danger larger than either.
Everyday expression
Everyday Pisces sits with someone without rushing to fix them, remembers a dream long enough to learn its tone, and hears the emotional key under a practical complaint. It is the last shift at a closing cafe, the choir note that makes a sentence unnecessary, the nurse or friend who can tell the difference between silence and peace. Imagination here is a way of knowing, not an escape hatch by default.
The symbol also belongs to endings done kindly: forgiving a small debt, letting a story finish, blessing a move without haunting it. Mutable water adapts. Adaptation is a skill only when you can also refuse, or the tide will make your choices for you.
Pressured expression
Under pressure, permeability is misnamed compassion. Boundaries dissolve, fog hides a decision, and other people's moods are hosted until your own is unfindable. Saviors and martyrs are two costumes for the same refusal to be a finite person. Substances, fantasies, and vague spiritual language can all serve the fog.
The pressured face may also punish clarity, as if a plain sentence were a kind of violence against wonder. Wonder does not require confusion. Pisces does not obligate you to be the feeling-bearer for a household, a workplace, or a scene.
Reflective use
Use the sign when imagination is the missing tool, and close it when imagination is being used to avoid a form. Give a longing an image, a cost, and, if it is a plan, a next step. If there is no next step, call it a longing and let it be that. Art, prayer, rest, and honest grief all belong here without having to prove they are productive.
Late winter in the Northern Hemisphere is thaw, meltwater, the year not yet firm. In the Southern Hemisphere these dates are late summer, a different dissolving, heat and harvest's end. Traditional rulership is Jupiter, with a modern convention offering Neptune.
Neither ruler means you are mystical by nature. The gate can be shut.

Image, cost, and a gate
- 1Describe one longing as an image only, with no plan attached, in four lines or fewer.
- 2On a second line, write what it would cost in sleep, money, or someone else's labor.
- 3If it is a plan, name the next honest step that could be done in a day. If it is not, write 'longing' and stop.
- 4Close with one boundary you will keep this week so the open gate is a choice.
